Using Illustrator, our project was to create a logo for a fictional business which is present within any film, television show or novels.
I decided to create a logo for Leonardo Dicaprio's characters company in the film Inception.
Having no previous experience with Illustrator, I felt it was necessary to have a play around with Illustrator and design a few rough logos.
The logo in the centre of the page is a dream catcher, conveying the companies role in an ambiguous manor.
I tried to keep the process of designing this logo simple. Using basic circular shapes as well as lines, creating the body of the dream catcher. For the final half of the dream catcher, I used three straight lines and then using the curve button tool I curved the ends of each line to create a realistic feel.
Another logo which was created with basic shapes was the Bishop chess piece. This features in the film as a totem for one of the characters. By using triangles, circles and rectangles with curved edges, it was very simple to make. Choosing the colour black gives off a silhouette style, which is what I intended it to look like.
A much more recognisable image from the inception film was the spin top totem that Leonardo DiCaprios character Cobb had. I found it incredibly difficult to design a three dimensional spin top, so I took an image off google and pasted it onto photoshop. I then changed the image by using the charcoal effect tool. After that process, I saved and transferred the image to illustrator and changed the colour from black to red so the image would match the colour of the font.
I was advised to change the font as it didn't really match the style of the logo. So I searched for a variety of fonts of the website; 'dafont.com' and found one called 'old newspaper print'. I felt that the style of newspaper ink was much more appropriate for this logo, as I was going for an almost business card look.
My final idea was based on an unofficial poster of Inception:
Using layers on Illustrator, I began to trace the outline of the image with the pen tool. Using straight lines and then creating anchor points, I pulled and curved the line to match the image.
Once I had traced the basic outline, I started the same process for the inside. Once I had the design of most of the head maze, leaving space in the middle I copied and pasted the image 3 times, re-sized them and placed them in side each other to represent the concept of 'dream levels' which is shown in their poster.
